Who needs extra care in heat and humidity?

How can humidity make heat feel harder?

The body cools itself partly through sweating and evaporation. When the air is humid, sweat may evaporate less effectively, and the body can have more difficulty getting rid of heat. This can make the same temperature feel more exhausting than it would feel in a drier climate.

  • short walking distances can feel longer;

Can heat and humidity affect medication planning?

Yes. Heat and humidity can affect medication storage, medication routines and how a person feels while taking certain medication. Some medication needs temperature control. Some medication can affect hydration, sweating, alertness, blood pressure or sun sensitivity.

Travellers should check:

  • whether medication must be refrigerated or protected from heat;
  • whether medication can be left outside a refrigerator for short periods;
  • whether the hotel room has reliable cooling or storage;
  • whether airport, flight and transfer time affect storage;
  • whether medication side effects may be stronger in heat;
  • whether alcohol, dehydration, sun or activity interact with medication;
  • what to do if medication is damaged by heat;

The useful question is not only “Is there air conditioning?” but “Can I safely live with the indoor-outdoor climate pattern of this stay?”

What about mould, allergies and respiratory symptoms?

High humidity can create indoor moisture problems if buildings are not well ventilated or maintained. Damp rooms, mould, dust mites and poor air quality can affect people with allergies, asthma or sensitive airways.

Travellers with respiratory or allergy issues may want to check:

  • whether rooms smell damp or mouldy;

  • mobility needs are too high for the local plan;
  • skin, wound or pressure-area risk is not covered;

A stay should not be made to look suitable just because the destination is beautiful or the climate feels promising. Suitability must be checked honestly.
