Specialist care abroad

Check whether the right specialist care is genuinely available in the right place

Quick answer

Not every region offers every specialty or complex treatment. Confirm the doctor or facility before choosing the destination. Also check records, language support, insurance, transport and the plan for moving to another region if local care is not enough.

What to check now

Define the exact specialty and level of care needed

Confirm the current facility, doctor and appointment route

Prepare records, translations and insurance approval

Plan transport and escalation to Phuket or Bangkok

Important limits

Care Collective does not recommend, rank, certify or medically approve hospitals, doctors, clinics or treatments. Care Collective cannot guarantee specialist availability, appointment times, diagnosis, treatment outcomes, language support, insurance approval, direct billing, discharge planning, medical transport or follow-up care.

This page is for orientation only. Decisions about specialist care must be made with qualified medical professionals, hospitals, insurers and, where relevant, the treating doctor at home.

Local care map

Use this map for practical orientation. It is not a medical referral system and does not confirm availability. Open the official links and check the specialty, doctor schedule, language, transport, insurance handling and emergency pathway before relying on a facility.

A map link is not a safety plan. For travellers with health limitations, the important question is whether the route, vehicle, timing, medical support and escalation pathway are realistic if the condition worsens.

Choosing the region is part of the medical safety plan

Klong Muang and Ao Nang can be well suited to a quiet stay. The location only fits the travel plan when the care likely to be needed is accessible locally or treatment in another region has already been firmly arranged.

A more distant facility can form part of the safety plan, for example for dialysis, kidney care, complex diagnostics or another specialty. It is not enough for the specialty to appear on a hospital website. Before travel, the following must be clarified and confirmed:

which hospital will accept the specific case

which department and appointment are actually available

whether previous reports, laboratory results or a medical referral are required in advance

whether treatment can be outpatient or may require admission

how the outward and return journeys or a medical transfer will be organised

which language support is available

how costs, advance payment and insurance approval are handled

what happens if the condition worsens before or after the appointment

This coordination can take place directly with the hospital or, where included in the booked service, with organisational support from Care Collective. The medical decision and binding acceptance of the case always remain with the treating hospital and responsible professionals.

The right question is not only “Does this specialty exist somewhere in Thailand?

” but “Is treatment firmly prepared for this person, on these travel dates and with a realistic transport route?”

At the time of review, official English-language pages were available for most facilities. The official Krabi Hospital website is mainly in Thai. Labels and short explanations on this Care Collective page are in English, while the linked original information may appear in English or Thai.

A search result confirms neither a doctor’s availability nor whether the hospital is suitable for a specific case. Contact the facility before travel and obtain written confirmation of the care pathway.

Which specialties are listed at each hospital?

The overview is organised by hospital. Select a hospital name to jump directly to its directory entry. Listed specialties are for orientation and do not confirm a particular appointment or treatment case.

Important questions

Open the questions to understand what should be checked before relying on specialist care abroad.

What does “specialist care abroad” mean?

Specialist care means assessment or treatment by a doctor or team with particular expertise. It can be planned, urgent, part of follow-up care or part of a longer treatment pathway.

This may include cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, internal medicine, gastroenterology, surgery, imaging, physical therapy, ophthalmology, ENT, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, dialysis, psychiatry, oncology, rehabilitation or second opinions.

The key question is not only “Is there a hospital nearby?

” but “Are the specialty, equipment, follow-up, transport and communication available for this specific case?”

Which care can remain local, and when is another region needed?

Outpatient questions, basic diagnostics, emergency orientation, physical therapy, internal medicine or individual follow-up checks may be realistic locally when the provider confirms the exact service.

Another region may be necessary or more suitable for:

complex surgery

advanced cardiology or interventions

neurosurgery

intensive care

dialysis or kidney treatment that has not been firmly arranged locally

oncology treatment pathways

complex psychiatric or crisis care

highly specialised rehabilitation

specialist care with a likely inpatient admission

Another region is only a viable plan when the hospital, appointment, transport, insurance and follow-up have been clarified in advance.

Why does this page link to current doctor searches?

Doctor schedules, appointment times, languages, leave and specialties can change. A copied list of names would not be a reliable promise of availability.

The better process is:

identify the needed specialty

open the current doctor search or centre overview

check whether the specialty is currently listed

ask the facility whether the doctor is available during the travel dates

ask whether English or other language support is available

ask whether insurance or advance payment is required

ask what happens if admission, transfer or follow-up is needed

Wattanapat Ao Nang doctor search

Use the current official doctor search for local specialist availability

Wattanapat Ao Nang centres

Check the currently listed specialties and service areas

How would I reach specialist care in another region?

Transport is part of the medical safety plan. From Klong Muang or Ao Nang, a transfer will usually begin by road in practice, using a private vehicle, ambulance or medical transport depending on the person’s condition.

Journey times to Krabi Town, Trang or Phuket can be substantial. Along longer routes, there are not high-level tertiary hospitals at short intervals as there may be in densely populated parts of Germany. It must therefore be clear in advance which hospital is the first realistic destination and what support is possible during the journey.

Before planning, check:

which hospital will accept the case

how long the transfer takes under realistic traffic and weather conditions

whether the person can sit, lie down or tolerate a longer road journey

whether oxygen, monitoring, medication or medical support is needed

whether an ambulance or specialised medical transport is available

who has medical responsibility during the transfer

whether the insurer has approved the transfer and treatment

which backup plan applies if the destination hospital cannot admit the person

Helicopter and air-ambulance capacity in the region is very limited, expensive and cannot be planned reliably. It depends on medical urgency, availability, weather, landing or take-off possibilities, cost, insurance and acceptance by a hospital. A helicopter must therefore never be treated as the normal substitute for a realistic road route.

What should be checked with the insurer?

Specialist care abroad can become expensive quickly. Before travel, check whether the insurance covers outpatient specialist appointments, diagnostics, hospital admission, pre-existing conditions, emergency care, medical repatriation and direct billing.

Questions for the insurer:

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Is planned specialist care covered, or only an emergency?

Are second opinions abroad covered?

Are diagnostics, imaging and laboratory tests covered?

Is prior approval required?

Does the insurer work with the selected hospital?

Is direct billing possible?

What happens if a transfer to Phuket, Trang or Bangkok is needed?

Is medical repatriation covered if local care is not sufficient?

Travel health insurance does not automatically cover planned specialist care or treatment abroad. The exact policy wording is decisive.

Which medical records and language support are needed?

Specialist care depends on good information. Missing records can delay assessment, increase costs or lead to repeated tests. Language support matters so that risks, options, medication changes and follow-up are understood.

Useful preparation:

medical summary in English

diagnosis list

medication list with active ingredients and doses

allergies and previous serious reactions

recent blood test results

imaging reports and image files where relevant

operation reports

hospital discharge letters

specialist letters

insurance details and emergency assistance contacts

a translation or interpreting plan where needed

Care Collective can help structure practical communication and organise suitable language support. Specialist medical translation or interpreting may still require professional support or services provided by the hospital.

Which documents should I prepare?

Medical summaries, insurance details, reports, allergies, emergency contacts and useful translations

Travelling with medication

Medication plans, active ingredients, prescriptions, certificates, storage, customs rules and controlled medication

When is even good specialist planning not enough?

Sometimes even a specialist plan does not make travel realistic. If the condition is unstable or too complex for the destination, postponing, changing the route, choosing another region, medical support or not travelling may be safest.

Warning signs include:

the condition is unstable or has recently worsened

the required specialist is not available within a safe distance

important medication or equipment cannot be secured

the insurance does not cover the relevant condition

medical records are missing or unclear

follow-up after treatment cannot be arranged

the emergency and escalation pathway is unclear

transport to a higher-level centre would be too risky

medical repatriation would be likely but is not insured

the plan assumes a helicopter or air ambulance as the normal backup

Specialist care abroad must not make an unsafe journey appear safe. If essential medical support remains unclear, the travel plan must be reassessed.

Specialist care checklist before booking

Use this list before relying on specialist care during a supported stay abroad.

define the exact specialty and level of care needed

check whether it is available in Ao Nang or Krabi Town or only elsewhere in the region

open the current doctor search or centre overview

obtain written confirmation of the specific appointment and acceptance of the case

for dialysis or recurring treatment, arrange every appointment before travel

ask whether treatment can be outpatient or may require admission

clarify language support and medical translation

prepare a medical summary, medication list, allergies, reports and image files

assess journey time and tolerance for road transport realistically

only plan an ambulance or medical transfer with a confirmed receiving hospital

do not treat a helicopter or air ambulance as the normal backup plan

check insurance cover, prior approval and direct billing

plan follow-up, the return journey and possible additional hotel nights

keep Care Collective’s role separate from medical decisions

“A hospital nearby” does not mean the right specialist care is available. The condition, confirmed appointment, transport route and support pathway are decisive.

How Care Collective can help

Care Collective can help travellers, companions and relatives structure specialist-care questions. It does not decide which treatment is right, but it can make important questions visible early.

Care Collective may help with:

recording specialist-care questions in the Journey Designer

distinguishing general care, specialist care, planned treatment and emergency care

collecting the right records before travel

linking to official hospital, doctor and specialty pages

preparing direct contact with a facility organisationally

supporting the coordination of a planned appointment where included in the service

explaining differences between Klong Muang, Ao Nang, Krabi Town, Trang, Phuket and Bangkok

connecting specialist questions with insurance, transport and repatriation

supporting companions with appointment logistics and language support

documenting uncertainty instead of promising unconfirmed care

Care Collective cannot choose a specialist, guarantee treatment, assess medical quality, interpret complex reports, approve insurance, provide medical consent on behalf of the traveller or replace emergency transport.

Costs and what is included

Reading this article and using the Care Knowledge Library are free. Specialist care can create substantial external costs.

Possible costs include:
